While reading the St. Louis Post Dispatch, I read an article about an organization that helps teachers purchase needed classroom supplies. It's called donorschoice.org. It's a pretty neat site to visit! At this time when everyone is scratching for money, school districts are feeling the effect as well. Educators need any help they can get. Too often, and I know from personal experience, we pull money out of our pockets to buy supplies.
The way it works is this: you look through requests made by teachers and donate money toward the amount needed to purchase their request. You can choose to look only at the state of Missouri and (I believe) the only schools listed are those considered high poverty (they have more than 70% of their students receiving free or reduced lunches). For goodness sakes, one woman doesn't even have manipulatives to teach math with!
I'm hoping to donate and I hope you will too. If nothing else, please visit the site and share it with others.
